The US Airforce is getting 18,000 Apple Ipads

The US Air Force has awarded a $9.4 million one-year contract to purchase up to 18,000 iPad 2 tablets.

The tablets would replace the paper manuals and charts that are currently in flight bags. Even some commercial airlines are making the switch, dropping the 40 plus pound bags in favor of tablets.

This is just another sign that enterprises are moving aggressively into the tablet space and a justification of Microsoft’s strategy to move quickly into that space.

What is concerning however is the disparity between Apple’s progress (Ipad 3) and Microsoft’s situation (Windows 8 Consumer Preview).

The longer it takes for Microsoft to go live with a viable Ipad alternative, the harder it will be to convince enterprises that Windows 8 will be the way to go.
