Apple Sold 3 Million iPads in 3 Days After iPad Mini Launch

From Apple today comes news that the company sold 3 million iPads in the 3 days following the iPad Mini launch.

This doubles the previous first weekend milestone of 1.5 million Wi-Fi only models sold for the third generation iPad in March.

Apple did not break down sales for the different iPads, but the iPad 4 was simulateneously released and will count as part of that total.

“Customers around the world love the new iPad mini and fourth generation iPad,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We set a new launch weekend record and practically sold out of iPad minis. We’re working hard to build more quickly to meet the incredible demand.”

Apple has had notable supply chain problems, leading to stockouts of the iPad mini mentioned by Cook.

The success of the iPad mini is of course, relevant to Microsoft and Windows 8 RT.

Just as Microsoft began taking the battle to the iPad 4, Apple has struck at the lower price point and smaller form factor – a space occupied by the Googl Nexus (one version), Amazon Kindle Fire and Barnes and Noble Nook.

In sort, Microsoft would be smart to turn their attention to this space, especially since the smaller tablets are cannibalizing the larger tablet market targeted by the Surface.
