The 10 Most Searched Things of 2012

Google, the number one search engine on the planet, just published the top 10 searched items during 2012. It helps us understand what the seething masses thought about this year.

They – Google -call it their 2012 Zeitgeist, or “the defining spirit or mood of a particular period of history as shown by the ideas and beliefs of the time.” Well, if this is what people filled their thoughts with in 2012, then some of it is pretty depressing.

Here’s Google’s overall global ranking of search terms in 2012:

1. Whitney Houston
2. Gangnam Style
3. Hurricane Sandy
4. iPad 3
5. Diablo 3
6. Kate Middleton
7. Olympics 2012
8. Amanda Todd
9. Michael Clarke Duncan
10. BBB12

One can understand Whitney Houston perhaps. Hugely talented singer/actor with a tragic end. Also, who can argue with the Olympics, with all the world’s countries coming together in celebration of sport.

But Gangnam Style? Help, someone. Personally, I’ll be really happy if I never saw another celebrity or non-celebrity attempt Gangnam style.

Of course Apple must be smiling to see the iPad3 in there.

Amanda Todd?

Diablo 3 and Kate Middleton? If that is “the defining spirit or mood of a particular period of history as shown by the ideas and beliefs of the time”, then we really are in trouble.

Google released an official video that shows some of the most important, far-reaching events of the year—is inspiring. At moments.

The US top 10 was slightly different:

1. Whitney Houston
2. Hurricane Sandy
3. Election 2012
4. Hunger Games
5. Jeremy Lin
6. Olympics 2012
7. Amanda Todd
8, Gangnam Style
9. Michael Clarke Duncan
10. KONY 2012

Of course, Linsanity shows up here, as does the Hunger Games. I guess humanity’s deep thoughts are not reflected in Internet searches.

Here’s to 2013.
