For those with older Windows Phone devices, the upcoming upgrade to Windows Phone 7.8 is a bittersweet experience. Sure, it’s great that you are getting some of the awesome features found on the latest Windows Phone 8 devices, but it’s a little sad to know that support for your device is starting to wind down.
Still, better than if Microsoft had dropped updates completely, right?
Microsoft has affirmed it will continue to support Windows Phone 7.x for a while longer, though it has been pretty awful about communicating its full plans or even telling us when we will see Windows Phone 7.8 arrive.
The good news is the wait is now OVER– if you are willing to flash your device, that is.
Thanks to the geniuses over at the XDA Developer Forums, there is now several threads with detailed instructions on where to find the files needed and how to flash your phone to Windows Phone 7.8 ahead of the scheduled arrival.
- HTC Titan
- HTC Mozart
- HTC HD2
- HTC Radar
- HTC HD7
- Samsung Omnia7
- HTC Trophy
- HTC 7Pro
- Nokia Lumia 710
- Nokia Lumia 800
If you have actively been involved in the modding scene for other platforms like Android, you might feel comfortable doing stuff like this, but it isn’t for everyone.
There is always a chance that if you mess up you could end up bricking your device, though this generally is a pretty rare occurrence.
For those that just want to wait it out for the official release of Windows Phone 7.8 for their device, you might not be waiting much longer.
The latest rumor suggests that Windows Phone 7.8 will in fact launch this coming Wednesday.
So how about it, have you tried flashing your phone over to Windows Phone 7.8?
If so, what do you think of the latest upgrade, is it a major improvement or not?
