Some Windows 8 Devices use BIOS embedded product key

Have you bought a brand new Windows 8 laptop yet? If you have, you might have noticed something missing on many of these devices, a little sticker on the bottom of the laptop.

For about as long as I can remember now, Microsoft has been issuing product keys. At one point these keys were found on the manual packaging (back in the Windows 9X days).

Eventually they made their way to the bottom of the PC, where they have stayed until now.

So where does the product ID go this time? Into the BIOS it seems. In order to better protect customers, the key has been eliminated going forward.

This means that users no longer have to worry about their key number wearing out of a pirate copying the number and using it to legitimately activate Windows for themselves. It also means we don’t have to type in the keys anymore, saving us time.

The way it now works is that you buy a laptop, it has the key built-in. You don’t have to worry about loosing it or doing much with it, activation is simple and keyless. Of course that brings up some questions as well.

How does upgrading for a basic version of Windows 8 to PRO work? Reportedly, the BIOS won’t even give you a chance to use your upgrade copy’s key and will instead just reactivate the older key and the basic version of Windows that came with it.

If true, there will likely be some solution that offers a way around this.

Keep in mind that this key-less solution seems to be showing up in only SOME Windows 8 devices, such as certain laptops. Others are continuing the use of traditional product keys on the back of the PC.

Windows 8 upgrade copies will also have a standard key. What do you think of the idea of some Windows 8 computers getting a BIOS-based key? Like the idea or do you prefer a physical copy of your product key?

I have yet to get a new Windows 8 device (though my home built PC is running Windows 8) so I can’t confirm which devices have this new BIOS key system. Does your new laptop/desktop use a regular key or is it pre-built? Let us know below.
