40 million licenses of Windows 8 sold so far

Microsoft revealed today that the they have sold 40 million licences of Windows 8 so far.

The numbers are surprisingly robust for an Operating System that has been widely panned by critics and pundits alike.

Tami Reller, the Windows Chief Marketing and Financial Officer, revealed the figure during a speech at Credit Suisse 2012 Annual Technology Conference.

Promotional pricing and aggressive advertising seem to have helped a little.

In comparison, Microsoft actually sold 60 million licences of Windows 7 in the same time span after release.

Microsoft did not go into any detail about sales of Windows RT, the mobile counterpart of Windows 8.
