Nokia Announces An Affordable Windows Phone 8 Device, Lumia 620

What took them so long?

Finnish mobile giant Nokia today introduced the third smartphone in its Windows Phone 8 Lumia range, called the Lumia 620. The new smartphone is expected to reach the market sometimes in the first quarter of next year.

The price tag of $249 (before taxes and subsidies, obviously) makes it the most affordable smartphone in the Windows Phone 8 series from the company.

Lumia 620 offers a compact design with a 3.8 inch TFT display and an 800×480 (WVGA) ClearBlack touchscreen display but still manages to pack in some performance punch with a 1 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processer inside.

512 MB of RAM is serviceable, but the 8 GB internal memory is supplemented by a microSD card slot that provides users an option to expand the storage as needed.

Since the device targets the midrange market, it also comes with support for exchangeable shells allowing owners the possibility of changing the color of their device whenever they feel like.

A 5-megapixel snapper sits on the back with LED flash and HD video recording capabilities, while a front camera is also present for use in video calls.

Nokia announced the smartphone in a post on its Nokia Conversation website:

“Compact and fun, it takes advantage of a new ‘dual-shot’ technique to create a variety of interesting new colors and textures.

Dual Shot involves casting two layers of polycarbonate, a single base layer and a second color, in a transparent or translucent layer, to produce depth effects and secondary color blends. For example, yellow and cyan are combined to produce an exciting new lime green, our own favorite”.

The smartphone is said to deliver up to 14.6 hours of talk time and 330 hours of standby. Standard technologies like Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, NFC, GPS and microUSB are included.

“Of course, with the emphasis on a younger audience, it also has Nokia Music, providing free streaming of ad-free tracks with no subscription or registration required and the ability to download playlists to listen offline”.
