Microsoft to Release Student Discounting, Should They Do More Than that Though?

If you ever intend to upgrade your current PC to Windows 8, now is the time to do it. The discount opportunity ends tomorrow officially. What if you are a poor student who can’t afford the upgrade right now, but is truly interested in getting your hands on Windows 8 sometime in the near future?

Luckily, Microsoft is extending its discount– sort of. For students, you can get an upgrade for $69.99, while this is more expensive than the $39.99 upgrade price that is being offered right now, it is a heck of a lot better than the $119 retail price that comes into affect on February 1st.

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any discount for students when it comes to full versions, just upgrades.

While this isn’t the first time we’ve mentioned it, we’ll say it again: Microsoft needs to reevaluate their pricing plans for Windows 8. Sure, this is the same pricing as Windows 7, but Windows 7 was introduced as a significant improvement to the highly flawed Windows Vista.

While Windows 8 is a true improvement over Windows 7, that’s not how many customers see it.

Windows 8 is a dramatic change from what consumers have become familiar with, and that means that lower pricing is key to getting the product into the hands of more consumers.

Beyond Upgrade Discount Pricing

Honestly though, how many people really upgrade versions? Many do, but a great deal of us simply upgrade our whole computer and move to the latest version that way.

This is why I think Microsoft would have been wise to consider offering special “rebates” to consumers that bought new Windows 8 PCs during the 2012 launch and maybe even 1st part of 2013. Offering customers a $50 rebate would have cost them profit in the short term, but would have more folks on Windows 8– and that means more app buying and service consumption. Think of the TONS of cash that Microsoft has sunk into Xbox, selling hardware at a loss. Why can’t they do something similar with Windows? Especially considering their real “cash cow” is Office.

Windows 8 has a solid product that sets them up for a great services distribution platform, if they are willing to offer better promotions to tempt users to make the jump. Anyhow, that’s just my own personal opinion. I like Windows 8, I just think Microsoft needs to do something a bit more radical to draw folks in. I believe once they familiarize themselves with the new OS, a lot of the drama surrounding it will go away.
