Microsoft Gives Away Free Skype Calls To MSN Users

Just how important Skype is for Microsoft is no secret. Redmond has gradually been giving the service center stage, ever since the $8.5 billion dollar purchase of the communication platform in 2011.

Another thing the company is betting big on is its MSN Portal.

The website was relaunched late last year (with the launch of Windows 8, as a matter of fact), with several improvements both under the hood and over it. And now the company is using Skype to boost the number of users for its portal.

Microsoft is now offering up to 60 minutes of free Skype calls to landline and mobile phones, and all you have got to do is make MSN your browser homepage.

Shades of late 90s, you say? Very! The ad reads:

“Get the Best of Now. MSN has teamed up with Skype to make our breaking news, celebrity exclusives and trending topics even easier to share. Make MSN your homepage and enjoy up to 60 minutes of free UK and international calls to landlines and mobiles with Skype.”

Vouches can be redeemed by August 31, 2013, and this page provides all the details of this new campaign including instructions.

Latest statistics put Skype’s user base at well over 663 million registered users. Meaning, it is an integral part of Microsoft’s future — not just when it comes to integration with Redmond’s products and services, but also in its bids to reach out to new consumers and entice them to the company’s solutions.
