SkyDrive Gets New Photo Timeline Feature, Three Times Faster Uploads

Redmond recently announced that over 250 million people had signed up for its SkyDrive cloud data storage service. Now the company announced a bunch of new features and improvements that are set to be rolled out in the coming days.

Arguably the most important new feature is the addition of a photo timeline, allowing SkyDrive users to view photos not just based upon the time they were taken, but also the events they were taken in.

Images can also be viewed in a slideshow mode in filmstrip view.

The software titan also announced that it has made some client and server improvements to the service, and this makes it easier to upload files to their account. The file uploading process is now two or even three times faster.

Microsoft explained this in a blog post saying:

“In the past few months we’ve also been hard at work addressing the feedback we’ve received about how long it sometimes takes to upload via the SkyDrive desktop app. To improve upload times, we worked on changes to both the app and the server code. The end result is that in our internal tests, we’ve seen a 2-3x improvement in upload times for photos.”

The company, of course, keeps on adding new features to SkyDrive, while at the same time providing it with an advertising push as it tries to bring as many users as it can to its cloud service.

These new improvements, however, come at just the right time. Just last week Microsoft announced that all Windows Phone 8 device owners will now be getting the ability to back up full resolution photos and videos to their SkyDrive account.
