Windows Phone 8 GDR2 Said To Roll Out In July

The next version of Microsoft’s mobile operating system could reportedly be heading towards smartphones as soon as next month. Windows Phone 8 GDR2 is the next anticipated update for the mobile OS, right before Windows Phone Blue hits availability.

This update has already been spotted online as Windows Phone 8 GDR2 (General Distribution Release), and the Australian carrier, Telstra, is expecting it to arrive for testing in its labs in the second week of July.

And this suggests that actual deployment could begin before the end of next month.

According to a report by WMPowerUser, the operator expects the new software to arrive for testing on the Nokia Lumia 920 smartphone first — sometimes around July 8. Flavors for other devices in the carrier’s lineup like the Lumia 520, HTC 8X and HTC 8S are expected to follow one week later.

As of right now there are no specific or concrete details on when exactly will the roll out start, but if the testing goes according to plan it should happen in the next couple of weeks.

Telstra is, obviously, only one of the many wireless carriers making preparations for the release of this update. Other networks will also have the new software ready for their customers by July.

Windows Phone 8 GDR2 is said to pack several appealing features over the previous version of Microsoft’s mobile operating system — including support for FM Radio, CalDav and CardDAV. As is usually the case, this will most probably be a phased rollout.
