Microsoft Details The Correct Way To Install Windows 8.1 Preview

Windows 8.1 Preview is almost upon us. The public preview version of the upcoming operating system will be officially unveiled tomorrow, and interest among technology enthusiasts is high with users already making plans to install it.

The official documentation that leaked a few days ago reveals that Windows 8 users should opt for the Windows Store for downloading and installation of the preview version.

Obviously, the operating system will also be available as standalone ISOs, but Microsoft states that this route is more suited for people that want to set up a dual-boot configuration and install Windows 8.1 Preview on a different partition.

For most others, the Windows Store is the easiest, safest and fastest way to do it:

“There are two ways to install Windows 8.1 Preview: through the Windows Store of through the ISO.

If you’re running Windows 8 in one of the 13 languages that the preview is available in, we strongly recommend that you download the preview from the Windows Store. When you install from the Store, you can’t create installation media, but most download the preview directly from the Windows Store.”

Obviously, Windows RT users have no other option than to update through the Windows Store. As the company wrote in the official Q&A:

“If you are running Windows RT, the only way you can update is through the Store. If you’re running Windows 8 and you don’t use any of the 13 languages the preview is available in, you’ll need to install using the ISO. If you’re running Windows 8 Enterprise, you’ll need to install the preview using the ISO.”

In other words, if you are an end user, you are best advised to get the Windows 8.1 Preview from the Windows Store. Enterprise users, those want to dual-boot and install the OS on a clean partition, and those that are running Windows RT should download the ISO.

Keep in mind that if you choose the ISO option, you will be required to input your Windows 8 product key. Updating from the Windows Store, however, does not require for a key.
