The newest version of Microsoft’s flagship operating platform, Windows 8, is as of right now installed on around 7.41 percent of computers worldwide, according to the latest figures by Net Applications.

And this, the market researcher, claims is good enough for it to become the third most popular OS in the world. But at the same time, the overall number of computers powered by Microsoft’s modern operating system is also an area of particular interest.

For some, a figure of over 7 percent may not seem all too impressive when taken into account that Windows 8 was released back in October 2012, but the fact that the estimated total number of users running the OS now comes in at 110 million changes the dynamics to an extent.

Paul Thurrott of WinSuperSite is claiming that the total number of active PC users reached estimates of 1.5 billion last month. So keeping this in consideration, Windows 8 user base is now in or around 110 million — a significant increase from last month.

In fact, Microsoft’s modern operating system posted its biggest growth since launch last month.

While this is good news for Redmond, an even better bit of news is that at the same time, Windows XP lost well over 3 percent of its users. The ancient OS dropped to a market share of 33.66 worldwide.

Windows 7, kept its leading position with 45.63 percent according to Net Applications.
