Windows 8.1 App Watch: Stencil

Oh, the benefits of getting early into app development for a particular platform! The biggest advantage one can avail is the choice of the best names for mobile applications.

Obviously, the best names are of little use if the app in question is terribly designed or comes with a dreadful lack of features. Luckily, Stencil avoids these pitfalls and offers a pretty feature rich package for this first outing on the Windows Store — with a perfectly appropriate name to go with it.

This is a diagram creation tool that allows you to create charts, flowcharts, diagrams, mind maps, and more right in the Modern UI of your Windows 8.1 computer. The application is easy to use with simple elements on the right alongside the main drawing area.

Even the official description is nice and simple:

“Stencils is an amazingly powerful app for creating flowchart diagrams, mind maps, organization charts, and much more.”

Once you are done creating your diagram, you get the ability to export it as images in a range of formats, so they can used anywhere you deem fit. That flat UI is low on color and contrast, but it is only polish. In terms of features, this productivity app brings it.

A bit of a downer is the fact that there is no free trial version available (as of right now).

But $2.49 nets you a pretty handy tool if you are into technical drawings and the like. The app offers full support for ARM based processors too, so you are all set no matter what sort of a device you are using Windows 8.1 on.
