Windows Phone 8.1 Release Date Set Between June And August

April is when Microsoft is expected to official unveil and detail the new features in Windows Phone 8.1, the next version of its mobile operating system. The release date, of course, is set for later.

How much late, you ask? Well, you may have to wait a couple of months, at the very least.

There is speculation that the final version of Windows Phone 8.1 will only be made available to network carriers in the June to August timeframe — quite a bit later than what was initially expected.

However, the Developer Preview build of the mobile OS is destined to arrive a lot sooner.

A relatively reliable source (at least when it comes to Windows Phone news) has claimed that Microsoft is planning a general public release around June and August, though owners of an App Studio account will be able to upgrade to Windows Phone 8.1 as early as April.

It appears that the sheer complexity and size of this upgrade may have influenced the company in deciding on this release date. Windows Phone 8.1 is as feature rich as they come, after all.

Obviously, major carriers are also known to take their time testing and release these updates, meaning there is every chance that some users may only be able to get their hands on Windows Phone 8.1 in September or October.

In any case, file this report as a rumor for now, until we hear something concrete from Microsoft regarding the release date of Windows Phone 8.1.
