Microsoft Launches New Tool To Help Users Migrate From Windows XP

Those of you still running Windows XP with plans to move to a newer OS have something good heading your way. Microsoft has just launched a simple new migration tool.

Available free of charge, this application comes with support for pretty much all the relevant versions of Windows — Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 — and should come in handy for users that do not have the time to transfer all their data to a new Windows installation.

Microsoft has developed this program in collaboration with Laplink, by the way.

Going by the title of PCmover Express, this application can be run on Windows XP computers and it transfers all the necessary files, including photos, music, videos, emails and even user profiles from an old PC to a new one powered by a newer version of Windows.

As the software titan explains in a blog post:

“This tool will copy your files, music, videos, email and user profiles and settings from your old PC to your new device, transferring across your home or work network, and even enables Windows XP users to customize exactly what they want to bring over to their new device.”

Redmond plans to make the application available for download later this week, and while it will initially be available only in English, support for several other languages will be added in soon after that.

Now you might be wondering what’s with the Express in the program title?

As Microsoft notes, a premium solution called PCmover Professional is also available that can be used to migrate applications running on Windows XP to a newer computer with Windows 7, 8 or 8.1. It is available at a special price for those interested.
