Download Windows 8.1 Update 1 With This Simple Registry Trick

Although Windows 8.1 Update 1 is now available for download, it is an unofficial leak, and that means Microsoft can close it at any moment. Luckily, another method has also been unearthed.

If the direct download links are not your cup of tea, then this simple registry trick should, for the lack of a better word, do the trick. A small change in your Windows 8.1 registry is all you need to automatically download the update to your computer.

This little trick is not for the absolute beginners, and as is usually the case, it is a good idea to save a backup of your registry just to be on the safe side of things.

When you are ready, simply fire up your registry editor and navigate to the following registry path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\

Once there, create a new key by the name of “SHWindowsPoolS14” and reboot your computer.

Your system will restart and then automatically go to Windows Update in order to check if new updates are available for download. Keep an eye on the following bundle of joy:

“Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB2919442) – (S14 Prerequisite v01.0008)”

This is actually a patch that Microsoft has released to prepare computers for Windows 8.1 Update 1. Install this, and check for new updates once again. You should be treated to KB2919355, which contains all the necessary files for Update 1.

Don’t be surprised if installation takes a while, but once it is download and deployed, just reboot your computer one more time and Bob’s your uncle!

Again, Microsoft can (and might) block this trick any moment, so consider it a limited time opportunity.
