Windows 8.1 App Watch: FIFA 14

Now who would have guessed that the perennially popular FIFA 14 game from EA Sports would be available for Windows 8 users, for free? But it is here alright, and it is making quite a splash on the Windows Store.

One of the more exciting launches in the store, this football simulation runs in the Metro interface of both desktops and tablets running Microsoft’s modern operating platforms.

It is the mobile variant, obviously, and not the full featured game that has been available on the PC for decades, but it still offers a dizzying amount of features — from real players to licensed teams and leagues, and the fast paced football (or soccer) gameplay.

Here is the official description:

“REAL PLAYERS. REAL TEAMS. REAL LEAGUES. Welcome to the most authentic football game on Windows 8. Feel the excitement of every pass, shot, and tackle with new touch controls. Plus, live every moment of real-world football mastery with EA SPORTS™ Football Club Match Day.”

The game is not without its flaws, though, and could use a little extra polish, some more stability and more importantly a couple of vital features like support for the Xbox 360 controller and online matches.

Although free, you do need to purchase some features and modes like Manager, Tournament and Kick Off. And this is rather limiting in more ways than one. But this is the case with other platforms where this game is available — no harm, no foul.

You do, however, need a CPU with at least 1.6GHz clock rate and 1GB of RAM with a decently powerful graphics card to really indulge. Tablets are invited too, for what is a 999MB download.
