Windows 8.1 App Watch: Modern Combat 5: Blackout

It is here. Finally. One of the most hyped mobile games of the year has at last landed on all platforms, from iOS to Android, Windows Phone to Windows 8. And for once, a game is worth the hype.

First up, this is one of the best looking games on Microsoft’s modern platform — no surprises there.

Modern Combat 5: Blackout is a first person shooter that comes optimized for touch devices. And it offers both single player and multiplayer modes, with character progression shared between the two modes, which allows for some interesting dynamics in gameplay.

Before we get to the details, the official description:

“Step into the action as the latest installment in the best FPS series raises the bar for shooter games once more! Create a squad, add your friends and test your individual and team skills against other squads!

Is single player your thing? Then step into a world on the brink of anarchy and shoot your way out of one dire situation after another to expose a lunatic who’s trying to tear the world to shreds.”

Not everything is pitch perfect, though.

Although the shooter offers everything you would expect from an action game of this type, including military talk and tons of enemies, the visual polish cannot hide the fact that the AI is often lacking.

Then again, this is a problem with most games these days — even big name titles.

A more glaring issue is that there are no options for adjusting the graphics, unlike the Android port of this game. Ironic, considering the Windows ecosystem is made up of desktops, notebooks, tablets, even netbooks. Still for $6.99 you get a great universal game that works on all versions of Windows.
