Windows 8.1 Update 3 Development Reportedly Initiated

With the second update to the operating system rumored to launch with next month’s Patch Tuesday updates, interest in what the future holds for the operating system is heating up.

Sure, we all know that Windows 9 is currently being worked on, along with little idea of what Update 2 brings when it launches August 12, but now there is word that the company has started development of the third refresh of the platform, Windows 8.1 Update 3.

A short tweet by Faikee, a Microsoft watcher with a good record, claims that while work on the third update has begun at Redmond, the company is unsure whether to launch it or not.

Not a good predicament to be in, surely!

Previous rumors on the matter have hinted that Update 3 could arrive in early 2015, just before the release of Windows 9, and this strategy still makes sense on a couple of levels.

With talk that Microsoft is pondering a free licensing model for Windows 9 in order to boost adoption of the platform, some are speculating that Windows 8.1 Update 3 will be available with a new set of product key, as a standalone operating system.

Which would allow anyone to install it from scratch, and then upgrade to Windows 9, leaving aside the hassle of deploying previous versions of the operating system.

While we still have rumors to go by for now, sources claim that Windows 8.1 Update 3 is being prepared for launch sometime in January or February, next year.
