Windows Phone 8.1 GDR1 Shows Up In OEM Documentation

There have been talks of Microsoft releasing an update for Windows Phone 8.1, which has recently started to roll out, and it seems that this upgrade to the mobile OS is nearing release.

This new version of the mobile operating system is supposedly called Windows Phone 8.1 GDR1, which is an abbreviation of General Distribution Release. And now it has been sighted in documentation aimed at OEMs on Microsoft’s Dev Center.

Take a look at it here.

All this could essentially mean that this platform update is almost ready, and nearing release. So much so that Redmond is confident that partners can now be informed of what this new version brings.

Estimated release date is set sometime between the August and September.

But as this report notes, some hardware vendors are already testing it out on new phones, which might mean that Microsoft has already passed it on to hardware partners to test this new version.

Details on what Windows Phone 8.1 GDR1 bring to the table are included in the link above, and these follow the rumors this update will allows support for creation of folders natively on the Start Screen, simply by dragging and dropping Live Tiles over one another.

Chances are that features will be detailed in the coming weeks.
