Well, here we are again. Microsoft rolled out the latest round of patches as part of its monthly cycle, but it appears that some August Update Tuesday patches are misbehaving.
There have been reports that some of these fixes are causing BSOD errors on Windows 7.
The issues show up after installing these three patches on computers — KB2976897, KB2982791, and KB2970228. The BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) error carries a simple yet cryptic 0x50 message.
In fact, some posts on the company’s Community forums claim that the 64-bit version of Windows 7 is the only operating system affected by these random errors. The cause of problem, however, is yet to be determined.
“I too have had the same problem blue screen of death after installing Tuesdays updates after messing around for hours I have had to hide KB2976897, KB2982791, and KB2970228 to be able to start my computer normally I wish that Microsoft would check the updates before releasing them I suspect that these updates mentioned above are not compatible with windows 7 64bit which I am running.”
Needless to say, it is perhaps best to wait a while before installing these updates, until Redmond investigates this matter further. You can simply hide these update from the Windows Update screen until a workaround is found.
The company is yet to comment on this issue, but is quite likely investigating it right now
