Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 Coming To Select Lumia Models

Well that’s a relief. Microsoft, it seemed, stood by its decision not to release its latest Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 firmware on older hardware, making this version exclusive to new handsets.

Handsets like on which it launched, the Lumia 640 and 640 XL.

At least that was the general impression.

But it now appears that some other devices will also get this new Windows Phone 8.1 firmware at a later date. Only a few, but that’s better than nothing. Particularly considering that the owners of these smartphones had to wait until the launch of Windows 10 for Phones otherwise for these new options.

Regardless, as mentioned here, the firmware could be pushed to both the Lumia 735 and the Lumia 830, which Microsoft likes to call the affordable flagship.

No word, though, on when the update will be made available for these two handsets.

Likewise, no confirmation on whether Microsoft will release Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 on more devices other than these two. Even though it’s clear that users do want access to it — thanks to the useful array of new features it brings to the table.

Features like support for Bluetooth keyboard, the pinning of settings to the Start Screen, a redesigned settings menu and other small improvements scattered throughout the operating system.
