August Cumulative Update Nukes Your Update History

Wait, what, now? In one of the oddest developments ever, it appears that the August cumulative update for Windows 10 fiddles with your update history, wiping it out altogether.

Apparently, this is a bug that affects the cumulative update that Microsoft released yesterday.

As part of the Patch Tuesday cycle of updates.

The software titan is yet to acknowledge this strange little bug, but reports around the web confirm that it impacts the history section of Windows Update.

As reported, the bug is linked to the KB403658 Cumulative Update that is meant to update Windows 10 Anniversary Update to build 14393.1593. That’s version 1607 of the operating system, by the way, meaning those rocking the newer Creators Update version are not affected.

Same goes for those still on the original RTM release of the OS.

Nevertheless, the history will be wiped clean after installing this cumulative update. That is, unless Microsoft manages to fix this or restore the history for each affected machine.

So, if you hold your update history close, or want to preserve anything in it, then be sure to take a screenshot and save the record before you go about the business of installing this month’s cumulative update.

Best to be safe than sorry, I always say!
