Linux Community Sues Microsoft Over Windows 8 Restrictions

Microsoft just can’t seem to catch a break. First it was the European Commission that handed a hefty fine to the company for failing to provide a browser ballot screen, and now Linux users are in on the fun.

The software giant is now facing legal action in Europe, after a Linux user group decided to sue the House of Windows for the restrictions built into its latest operating system.

Yes, you guessed right, the UEFI Secure Boot technology built into Windows 8.

Accord to a report over at Reuters, an 8000 member strong Linux community by the name of Hispalinux has just filed a complaint against Microsoft claiming that this technology makes it very difficult for users to run an Ubuntu distribution.

Jose Maria Lancho, the Hispalinux head (who coincidently also happens to be a lawyer) was noted as labeling the UEFI Secure Boot technology:

“A de facto technological jail for computer booting systems … making Microsoft’s Windows platform less neutral than ever. This is absolutely anti-competitive. It’s really bad for the user and for the European software industry.”

Yup, you read that right.

Anyway, bypassing Secure Boot and running Linux on a PC designed for Windows 8 is not all that difficult for experienced users, but novices may have a bit of hard time who will find this is a real challenge and may get stuck with Microsoft’s latest operating system.

This essentially, is the crux of the lawsuit, which Hispalinux believes is an unfair practice. The Linux user base has detailed this in the complaint sent to the European Commission.

Yeah, those scary guys, eek!
