Perhaps one of the most important third-party software releases on the fledgling Windows RT platform has just landed. Futuremark has now announced its flagship benchmarking tool, 3DMark, is now available for Windows 8 and RT users on the Windows Store.

And the application comes with features that let users compare the results with statistics collected from other Windows RT, iOS and Android devices. In other words, mobile platforms are now finally coming of age, and performance is increasingly becoming a defining factor among these devices.

This gives users of Microsoft’s latest platform the power to test the capabilities of their devices without leaving the Modern UI.

Here is a selection from the official description:

“Use 3DMark to test the gaming performance of your Windows RT device, then see how it compares with other models. You can even compare your benchmark test scores with smartphones and tablets running Android, iOS or Windows.

3DMark is used by millions of people, hundreds of hardware review sites and many of the world’s leading technology companies. It’s the industry standard benchmark for graphics performance measurement, a professional level diagnostic tool now available to everyone for free!”

The cross-platform capabilities of 3DMark make it a unique solution that puts the CPU, GPU, display resolutions and other factors of devices through the mill.

Three tests based on the Ice Storm test scene are included in this free app — namely Ice Storm, Ice Storm Extreme and Ice Storm Unlimited. And as noted above, all versions of Windows 8, including those based on the ARM architecture are supported.
