If you are interested in finding out just how far free games on the Windows Store have come along, then Six Guns is the app you need. Developed by Gameloft, this free to download and play game has a lot in common with the popular console title Red Dead Redemption.

And just like many Gameloft titles before it, this one does not focus as much on story but on gaming action. You get to explore the Wild West landscapes in Arizona and Oregon on horseback. A variety of missions are on offer — from defending locations to taking out robbers, even horse racing.

Here is a selection from the official description:

“Freely explore an open world set in Arizona and Oregon full of events, mystery and challenges for you to discover as you become completely immersed in the story and the action. But don’t be fooled by this land’s beauty – outlaws, vampires & many other unnatural foes lurk in every shadow.”

While the visuals are rich (if not appropriately high definition) and the landscapes are adequately represented, the game makes do with some rather simple controls that are perfect for casual players, but are a bit lacking when it comes to advanced options.

The same goes for the gun fights and overall difficulty of game play.

Six Guns makes use of an integrated store that allows you to buy some items with the money you earn by completing quests, and others that are only available with real money. Still, as far as free titles go, you would have to think really hard to name a more engaging title.

Full support for ARM based versions of Windows is on offer, making the game a perfect fit for tablets and devices powered by Windows RT.
