It sure does feel a tad queasy writing about the Windows Phone GDR2 and Nokia Amber updates this close to the official unveiling of the GDR3 and Bittersweet Shimmer, but this is what it is.
While many networks have already begun, and in some cases finished the rollout of the GDR2 update for their Windows Phone devices, AT&T’s release has been quite staggered.
Last we heard on the matter is that the wireless carrier was ready to roll out the Amber update for the Lumia 920 in the coming weeks. And the good news is that the long awaited firmware update has start making their way to Lumia 820 and 920 devices in the US.
Speculation that the updates were incoming were first reported by WPCentral, and the rumor itself came from a post on the AT&T forums. Additionally, a Community Manager at the network also confirmed that the deployment will start soon:
“AT&T has completed testing the Nokia Lumia 820/920 Windows Phone software update on our network. We expect Microsoft to make the update available beginning 10/10. When the software update is available for you to download, Windows Phone will notify you so you can download it directly over a Wi-Fi connection. We appreciate your patience.”
And now there are reports that users are finally getting update notifications on their handsets.
The GDR2 update is a small upgrade for Windows Phone 8 that brings a few new features and addresses some previous ones. The Amber firmware update is actually a customized one from Nokia that bring a bunch of new options like call as SMS filters and the Nokia Smart Cam suite to Lumia devices.
In fact, Nokia has also updated its support page to confirm that the GDR2 and Amber updates are coming in today. So sit tight and stay calm, it is only a matter of time now.
As is usually the case, it may take some time for the update notification to arrive on your device, but it will be delivered in the coming weeks.
