You’ve probably heard about Dell’s move to go private recently. Now they even say that Microsoft might be tossing money in to make the change happen.
Dell wants a better control over its future and its destiny, and many believe that this could be the right move, even though it presents other new challenges along the way. Now Ben Curtis pipes up with his own solution for Dell.
Who is Ben Curtis? You probably know him better as the “Dell Dude”. Yep, Ben Curtis was part of Dell’s big “Dude, you’re getting a Dell” campaign back at the turn of the new millennium. Whatever happened to that
annoying likable stoner actor anyhow? Well he was busted for buying weed and Dell decided to dump the teen and move on.
Now at the age of 32, Ben Curtis’ “sage advice” for Dell isn’t to go private, its simply to bring him back. Ben Curtis says via an email to Bloomberg:
“I think they’re making a huge mistake and simply need to bring back the Dell Dude! That’s it. That’s all they need to do. If they brought me back, their sales, stock and media presence would skyrocket. That is by FAR the smartest move they could make.”
While this is clearly a cry from Ben Curtis for a few more minutes of fame, I admit that in theory a revived “Dude your getting a Dell campaign” wouldn’t be that bad of an idea. Nostalgia sells and its a tactic that Microsoft is utilizing itself in an attempt to win back Internet Explorer fans through a new commercial that takes us back to the 90s, an era I personally grew up in. And let’s face it, most of us probably still think of the “Dude you’re getting a deal” mantra when thinking of the company and its products.
That said, I think that saying bringing him back would instantly change stock, sales and media presence is more than a bit of a joke. What do you think, would you like to see Ben Curtis return for a brief “Dude, your getting a Dell” commercial campaign or should we leave the past behind us and move forward?
