Chris Capossela named senior vice president for Microsoft marketing across all products

Microsoft has named Chris Capossela senior vice president for Microsoft marketing across all products.

Capossela was the former senior vice president for marketing in the Microsoft Business Division and he worked on launching Office 2010 last year.

He will become head of Consumer Channels and the Central Marketing Group.  He replaces Mich Mathews, who said last week she was retiring after two decades. Capossela has also worked at Microsoft for 20 years.

This hopefully is good news..

Now, far be it for me to give a marketing veteran some advice but screw it, I will anyway.

Microsoft marketing has a really good opportunity to do things a little differently from the way they have been done before.

They can start by building a large consumer portal that people actually find attractive and want to use.

An attractive website that would have forums, articles, polls and social networking.  It would have videos about the various tools and tech products that Microsoft were thinking about/developing.

It would also be a place where consumers could interact informally with executives and developers and share their concerns and feedback on upcoming Microsoft products.

This could help build not only consensus but excitement about upcoming Microsoft products and events.

I think it’s nuts that something as basic as that doesnt exist or hasn’t been properly executed.

In 2011, there are a lot of things that Microsoft could do to regain some of the respect and momentum that seems to have been lost lately. This could be one.

Just my 10 cents..
