Finally! Microsoft Officially Confirms Windows Blue

What’s the use of hiding it any further when everyone and their grandmas know about the existence of codename Windows Blue, eh? We now get the official confirmation straight from Redmond.

Having said that, the company still refused to provide specific details on what it would offer, but Microsoft did confirm that a “set of plans” is now under development for the first major update to Windows 8 — the latest operating system from the company.

Microsoft corporate vice president Frank Shaw shared the news in a post on the official Microsoft blog, saying that Blue is the internal codename of the project. Clearly a hint that the final version of the OS will get a different title:

“With a remarkable foundation of products in market and a clear view of how we will evolve the company, product leaders across Microsoft are working together on plans to advance our devices and services, a set of plans referred to internally as Blue.”

Not sure whether this was ideally the date when Microsoft may have wanted to lift the veil on this new initiative, but probably the leak of the alpha build of Blue factors into this announcement.

Nevertheless, it is here, and it is official.

Microsoft has also confirmed that it is holding the next BUILD conference on June 26 through June 28 in San Francisco, meaning you can expect to learn a lot about this new iteration of Windows then.

According to the grapevine, the stable version of the Blue project is headed for release sometimes this summer — most probably in August — while the first beta build is set to be launched in June.
