Until Saturday, that is. The Surface Touch Cover is an essential accessory for Microsoft’s flagship tablets, and now the company has rolled out a limited time promotion.

Very limited time, in fact, as this new deal ends this week.

Anyway, anyone that purchase a Surface tablet, any Surface tablet, through the Microsoft Store website will get a Touch Cover for free. This offer is good for the original Surface RT, the Surface 2, Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2, new and refurbished.

Here is what Microsoft has to say on this neat new deal:

“Valid 3/23/2014 until 3/29/2014, or while supplies last.  Not valid on prior orders or purchases; cannot be transferred or otherwise redeemed for cash or gift cards. Not combinable with other offers. Price discount does not include taxes, shipping or other fees. Void where prohibited or restricted by law. Microsoft reserves the right to modify or discontinue offers at any time. Limit 5 per customer.”

This promotion is also valid for the Surface 2 with LTE that launched for AT&T recently, and users can also select any Touch Cover color — ranging from black, white, red, magenta and cyan.

It does not, however, transcend to the Touch Cover 2, nor is the Type Cover included in the deal. Only the original Touch Cover that previously retailed for $79.99 before taxes. One might imagine the company still has excess inventory that it wants to clear out.

But a deal is a deal is a deal, so if you are interested, hit up the link above to check it out.

A gratifying moment for Microsoft, surely. The company has delivered on its promise of...

  1. Obviously, they’re trying to clear inventory as you said, but this is still a fair promotion anyway. I doubt it’ll make people now buy surface tablets if they didn’t plan on it, but it’ll be a great deal for those who planned on purchasing even before this promotion.

  2. Decent promotion. I do wish they’d make it longer than a week. I don’t think this will last long enough to generate enough attention and fanfare it would receive if more people found out about it.

In my opinion, offering the touch cover without the type cover makes it clear this is an inventory issues. I don’t think this is all that impressive, but that’s just me.

    • They know that. While it’s a “promotion,” they know if you get that for free, odds are you’ll pay for a type cover as well, especially if you perceive value considering the touch cover is free.

  4. Windows 8 is different from other tablet OS that it has desktop mode. So it is actually necessary to have a keyboard cover imo. It’s not a very nice experience to use my fat finger on desktop apps.

    • Actually I can’t use any tablet without a keyboard. No matter what I’m doing I’m eventually going to have to type. I never used the iPad my job gave me until they one day gave us keyboard covers

  5. I don’t know why they didn’t do this a long time ago and as a longer promotion. They should have been big Surface promotions and bundles all through the holiday season. Just like they’re doing the $100 a new PC promotion, they could have done a big XXX % off when you buy multiple PCs and devices and/or accessories from the Microsoft store.
