While Microsoft’s Windows Messenger is already being phased out in favor of Skype integration, “GroupME” for Windows Phone continues to chug along. The newest version of the app is now out and adds several new features, including Windows Phone 8 support.

What’s new in GroupMe? There is new start screen with large tiles, an improved chat interface and new speed boasts along the way. For those that haven’t used GroupMe before, it basically allows you to start group chats, send images and more from people in your contacts.

This is pretty much the same thing as “Rooms” for Windows Phone 8, though this also has multi-platform support. Don’t be surprised if the time eventually comes for both Rooms and GroupMe to get axed and simply roll in to the Skype app.

It seems like a waste of resources to have so many apps and services that are essentially the same with only a few very minor differences. Of course, that’s just my opinion and I might very well be wrong. What do you think of services like GroupMe and Rooms? Could Skype eventually be used to do the same thing or not?
