The highly popular Lumia 520 is not only the champion in sales charts and market share graphs, but the budget handset also leads the Windows Phone Store in term of app downloads.

In fact, over a quarter of all downloads were recorded on this smartphone.

That’s amazing and troubling at the same time — if such is a thing is actually possible!

Microsoft shared the details in their regular trends update for the Windows Phone Store, and data for the month of November 2014 indicates some inspiring numbers all round. Statistics for the Windows Store are also in, just in case you were wondering.

And on the desktop side of things, 92% of all downloads recorded on Windows Store were from hardware powered by Windows 8.1, and not the vanilla Windows 8.

Pretty neat.

On the phone side of things, Windows Phone 8.1 also leads, albeit with an overall share of 65% when it came to application download. Some 5% of users also looked for apps on the now vintage Windows Phone 7. Expect this number to go down further.

The Nokia Lumia 520 is still the most popular Windows Phone handset around, while Lumia 530, Lumia 625 and the Lumia 630 are also some of the other prevalent choices.

Low memory devices, as Microsoft puts it, account for top five when it came to total downloads, and seven of the top ten. A result of focusing primarily on the budget side of the market, I’m sure.

And while categories and rankings have become fairly stable on both app repositories, the Games category on the Windows stores continues to grow — now account for 42% of all downloads on the platform. Not very surprising, considering the amount of games that we’ve seen recently.

Even the App Watch column here is filled with games more often than not.

In any case, there are more than 525,000 apps available for users of Windows and Windows Phone devices, and future growth is expected in the coming months, as Microsoft is currently preparing important updates for both platforms.
