Microsoft internally have acknowledged the name "Windows 8"

Microsoft staff are now officially allowed to refer to 2012′s impending Windows release as “Windows 8″.

There is a caveat with this however.

This caveat is that no formal naming has yet taken place for the product and, as a result of this, it is subject to change and the name Windows 8 should in no way be construed as the final name for the operating system.

Windows 8 is simply a code name used to refer to the product internally.

So we do now have another name by which everyone, including those within Microsoft, are allowed to refer to the product.

It’s new to them even though the rest of the world has been talking about it for almost two years.
