Nokia Thinking Of Including Active Bezels In Future Smartphones

The Finnish telecom giant has carved a nice little niche for itself with its colorful smartphone designs, and though its might have handed over its devices and services business to Microsoft, it still actively researches and developers new technologies.

And speaking of active, it appears that the company has patented a new one — active bezels.

This new technology might make it to future Nokia smartphones and tablets, and as this report notes, bezels, the area surrounding the screen of cell phones are for the most part inactive. Sure they house buttons, sensors, volume rockers and whatnot, and allow users a better grip on the device.

But a new patent (WO2014/029906A1) reveals that the company is looking to change this, allowing bezels to become active and include a series of feature.

However, specific actions will need to be performed to make activate the bezels, and they can also be configured to stay active for only a period of time. The patent makes it clear that the device could also be configured to offer visual or haptic feedback of the bezel become active.

Interesting development, and though there is no confirmation that Nokia will indeed include this technology in its future mobile devices, chances are that it might.

At the very least it will add to its already impressive portfolio of mobile patents.

This sounds intriguing! I was unfamiliar with the term “bezel” before this, so thanks for explaining. As I said, it sounds intriguing, but I’m not quite sure what they plan to use that space for. What kind of features could they add to that part of the phone?

I think as Emily mentioned above, they could add more speakers or just make the screen bigger and remove the bezel. I’m not entirely sure though.

    cool

Patenting this is smart. At the very least, no one else can perfect the technology before them. However, I’m a little unsure with how much this will add to the phone and if it’s worth it.

I see potential in this! They could add more speakers or multiple other features to the bezel. I will keep my eye on this! Thanks for posting.

David, any idea on the technology they have in mind for the bezel? I’m curious like everyone else. Seems like there’s endless possibilities.

I agree. I cannot tell if the bezels will simply become more screen or have new features added to them. I cannot think of what they could fit in that space though! Maybe another camera?
