The gap is closing. Owners of Windows Phone devices can now access another popular service from their smartphones. The official Uber app has just been made available for download.

Uber is, simply put, a network of private drivers.

Available in more than 40 countries already, the service allows users to request a ride straight from the mobile app, and they will get picked up within minutes. And since this is an on-demand service, users do not need to make prior reservations.

This post on the Nokia Conversations blog announces the good news:

“Uber is a technology platform that connects riders with safe, reliable and seamless transportation in cities around the world with the single touch of a button. Download the Uber app for Windows Phone, register and then get started.”

And in case you are wondering, the service provides several added advantages, including GPS capabilities to find your location, an estimated time of the driver’s arrival, and automatic payments as soon as the ride is complete.

All registered drivers are fully insured and background checked.

The Windows Phone app, although feature-rich for an initial release, is also expected to get a series of new options, including fare quotes within, shareable links, and the ability to split fares with friends.

Available for free, the app can be download here, both on Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 8.1.
