Windows 10 ARM Devices Still On Track, Microsoft Assures Eye On Windows

Windows 10 ARM Devices Still On Track, Microsoft Assures

If you’ve been keeping track of proceedings, you may have noticed that those Windows 10 ARM devices seem to have fallen of the path. Microsoft only gave them the briefest of mentions at IFA 2017.

However, the company has assured that Windows 10 hardware powered by ARM based processors is still on track, and due for arrival in the coming months.

And years.

In case you need a refresher on what these affordable computers will be able to achieve, then this video of the demo that Microsoft showed off last December at WinHEC is pretty much all you have:

Anyway, Qualcomm actually published a blog post to highlights its Always Connected PC leadership recently, inviting readers to stay tuned to learn more on how Windows PCs powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Mobile PC Platform are delivering breakthrough user experiences.

Basically, there is movement on this front.

And Microsoft followed it up by saying that these PCs are currently in development, and should be hitting store shelves soon:

“We are on track to see Windows 10 on Snapdragon devices become available this year as previously shared. Microsoft and Qualcomm continue to work closely with our OEM partners ASUS, HP and Lenovo in bringing Always Connected devices featuring always-on LTE connectivity and great battery life to market.”

Soon enough.

Although Microsoft and Qualcomm seem to be taking their time to perfect things, fact remains that advancements in mobile processors has opened up new avenues. Avenues that both companies will be keen to tap into — particularly considering how rapidly these ARM based chips improve.

So, while the first Always Connected PC, as they are being called, will launch in 2018, it looks like they will primarily be focused on connectivity. Don’t expect them to run Photoshop just yet.

The primary hurdle here is to make sure that Win32 is compatible on ARM without emulating the Intel x86 ISA. Once that is achieved, there is no telling what these portable PCs will be able to achieve. It’s a bit of a wait, but it promises to be worth it.
