Discovery is another one of the companies that have taken to development on Microsoft’s new platform, and it has just launched another loaded little app for Windows 8.1.

This brand new app, dubbed Discover News, provides quick access to quality science and technology content right in the Modern UI, with daily updates of the latest stories and new videos.

Before we get to what is on offer, here is the official description:

“From the people who bring you the Discovery Channel, Discovery News is the collective effort of a team of experienced journalists dedicated to satisfying the curiosity of our readers by bringing them stories and perspectives they won’t find anywhere else.

With the Discovery News app for Windows, you’ll be constantly updated with news articles, videos, photos and more – with a primary focus on explaining the world through a lens of curiosity.”

It goes without saying, if you want to keep tabs on topics like Earth, Animals, Space, Technology, History, Adventure and more, then prepare to spend countless hours with this free app.

The user interface and design is serviceable for now — with room for improvement. It is undeniably Metro with focus on content, and is completely touch optimized. But hopefully future improvements are not far away. In terms of worthwhile content, though, this one is a winner.

And it supports all versions of Microsoft’s modern operating system, meaning users of ARM based Windows devices can join in the fun with ease.

Oh, it totally does. It’s just that I’ve seen some apps done really amazing when it comes to the UI. This one’s just that a wee bit chunky for now, personally for me, with room for that extra polish.

The eBay and Staples apps for instance are marginally better. But if we were talking numbers, I’d give this a clean 8.5. I’m sure the developers will enhance it further with coming versions, this much is guaranteed.

But good to hear you liked it. 🙂 Looks pretty neat on a tablet.
