Who knew that generically named mobile apps could be this much fun? 2014 is the year of football (or soccer, if you so prefer) with the FIFA World Cup in Brazil this summer being the highlight.

And while the Windows Store boasts some quality sports app, there is always room for one more, particularly if it is as good and feature rich as this one.

Going by the name of THE Football App (huh, what?), this application from German developer is a model of Germany efficiency — nothing fancy in terms of the user interface, just vital statistics and nicely organized reports on all things football. And I do not say that lightly.

More on that below, but here is the official description:

“THE Football App is the most comprehensive football app for your smartphone and an absolute must for all football fans! We cover over 100 international football leagues and competitions live and in incomparable detail. This includes Premier League, Champions League, Bundesliga, Serie A, La Liga, Ligue 1, World Cup Qualifiers and much, much more.”

As you can see all the major leagues and competitions are covered.

In terms of features, you get editorials, commentaries, live scores, results, fixture details, news and rumors, videos, statistics, squad information, tactical lineups, tablets — basically the whole enchilada!

Live Tiles support is also in, so you can stay updated on your Start Screen.

The interface could use a little polish for some added shine, but it is hard to fault this free app in terms of the features it brings. If you are a football fan, you owe it to yourself to take this for a spin. And you can do that on any and all Windows 8.1 devices, including ARM based ones.
