Windows 8.1 App Watch: Guardians Of The Galaxy: TUW

Just like the quirky movie it is based on that itself is based on even more eccentric comics, Guardians of the Galaxy: TUW is an unusually distinctive game. TUW stands for The Universal Weapon, by the way.

Getting back to the point, it retails for $7.99, no free trial version is available, the game is not distractingly 3D in appearance, and you do not need an Internet connection or make in-app purchases to play. Nevertheless, this is a welcome change of pace from Marvel Entertainment

But more than that, it is a bold move, and a fine effort. The film hits theaters on August 1, but you can unlock, upgrade and control 25 characters from this wacky universe in two different game modes.

Here is what the official description states:

“Join Star-Lord, Rocket, Groot, Gamora and Drax in an all-new adventure– Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: The Universal Weapon! Jump into battle to help the Guardians recover the five pieces of The Universal Weapon before it falls into the hands of the villainous Ronan the Accuser!”

Story and Arcade are the two modes available, and you can recruit heroes, level up their skills, and then take them to battle against the hordes of villains.

The game supports all Windows 8.1 enabled devices, including those based on ARM based processors. And while performance is satisfactory more or less, it could be a little bit more optimized for budget tablets like those based on Intel Atom processors.

This screenshot grabbed me instantly. It looks fun and interesting. I may try the free trial, but I doubt I’m going to shell out $8 for a game. Too expensive for my tastes.
