After the briefest of hiatuses due to BUILD 2014, the App Watch column is back. Not exactly with a bang, but with a serene health and fitness app that will cost you all of 316 MB to download.

Now this is something you don’t see very often, most apps in this category are a hundred times smaller.

Curiously named, Sleep Bug is a noise machine — it can be used to mix ambient sounds to generate a realistic listening experience for when you are sleeping. Already a hit on iOS and Windows Phone, this free app has recently landed on the Windows Store.

And here is the official description:

“Sleep Bug is an ambient sound mixer that produces a variety of scenes and music with random sound effects. The built-in sound generator creates a realistic listening experience to help calm a busy mind and is perfect for adults, children, and babies who are having trouble sleeping. You can also use sleep bug in the office to mask out distracting noises, improve concentration, and increase privacy.”

While the UI is minimalistic in nature, and simple in design, it ensures that the application can be easily configured. There are no ads, and it comes with background audio support so users can use other applications when listening to the sounds this app generates.

And sounds it generates — you get 24 scenes (12 of them included, the other 12 unlockable) with 83 different sound effects and a total of well over 300 different sounds.

Sounds like crickets, chimes, eagles, drums and aliens? All in. Scenes like beach, weather, music box and city? Ditto. This really is a neatly designed and highly rated application. Touch optimized, and with full support for all flavors of Windows, including ARM based ones.

300 different sounds is a good amount for a free app. I will test this out and see what my favorite is. I’m sure the beach will win!
