Windows 8.1 App Watch: TechCrunch

It is mildly amusing how some of the biggest technology websites have faltered when it comes to creating apps for Windows 8. AOL might be force behind TechCrunch, but the official app still leaves a fair bit to be desired.

Released not too long ago, it currently enjoys some middle of the road rating and reviews.

This free app does a lot of things right in terms of content, but some stability issues (takes an age to load up) and a pedestrian UI spoil the overall experience. Compared to some of the other competing apps, this one needs just that extra polish, and customization options, to really seal the deal.

Here is the official description:

β€œThe TechCrunch app is the best way to get the hottest technology news on your desktop, laptop, or tablet. Browse the latest headlines with a flick of your finger then tap to dive into an unparalleled source of stories about startups and Silicon Valley, gadgets and go-getters.”

All things considered, it still does a pretty neat job of bringing the latest news stories from the website straight to the Metro environment of Windows 8.

And admirably, each articles comes with a personalized recommendation section underneath β€” it suggests related stories for you to read, based on the news you have read in the past. CrunchBase also comes integrated, so you can look up company information from within the app.

A quick and breezy 2MB download make this a must-have download for every technology enthusiast, and hopefully the developers refine it further in the near future. For x86, x64 and ARM.

Personally, I would rather read this site rather than TechCrunch. Just my opinion.

I agree cause I’m on here now and I don’t read TechCrunch. Lol. I cant really judge it too much cause I don’t read it, but I guess it’s a good app for those really into tech news.

I’ll give it a shot. I like the name on the company and do think they do some things well. However, as you mentioned, there’s still a lot left to be desired. Maybe that’s just me.

If you’re super into Silicon Valley (not the show) and the newest tech news, then this is a great app in my opinion! if you’re not into it, don’t waste your time cause you’ll hate it!
