Windows 8.1 App Watch: WTA

If there is one thing that the Windows Store needs, it is oodles and oodles of official apps. As in official clients to popular websites, services, businesses, institutions and organizations.

Third party apps are fine — and there are plenty of these for Windows 8.1 — but official ones are the real deal. Good news, then, that another official solution has found its way to the Windows Store. WTA, the Women’s Tennis Association have coded one up and released it for Microsoft’s platform.

Going by the rather illustrious name of WTA – The Official Windows Application, this app brings player profiles, photos, news, and rankings (along with a ranking history) plus detailed information about upcoming tournaments. In a delightful design, at that. The UI is slick.

Here is the brief and simple official description:

“The Official Windows App of the Women’s Tennis Association. Check out news, photos, stats, rankings and more for your favorite players.”

As you can imagine, this app is for fans through and through, and it shows in the beautiful and elegant design, wealth of information and gorgeous photos. Even social feeds are included.

And one of the most interesting features of this app is the versus mode that measures how two players rank up against each other in terms of matches, prize money, country, age, height and other such criteria. The free app is compatible with all Windows 8.1 devices, including ARM based ones.

It’s always nice to add official free apps as you mentioned. I enjoy tennis, but I’m not a huge fan. I still may download this, but there’s certainly a large segment out there who will eat this up.

Pretty cool app to have as official. Will probably receive a lot of downloads around the 4 major events, but other than that won’t get a lot of use. Just my opinion.

I am a huge tennis fan, particularly on the woman’s side! This app is a Godsend! Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  • Jason Claven

Not the biggest tennis fan, but this looks immersive and detailed. As Ted stated, I’ll probably give this a shot around Wimbledon time.

A very cool official app to have! From my perspective, it seems like all of the official professional sports apps are popular and well done, so I expect this will be the same.

I’m sure a lot of guys will like this for the photos of the beautiful and famous tennis players. I won’t mind that either! 😛 Good app either way.
