It is remarkable to think that keyboards related issues have made a rather large part of the Windows 8.1 Preview bug reports. Then again, considering the myriad of hardware vendors and tons of languages the OS supports, this may not be all that surprising.

Microsoft has already rolled out a number of updates for the public preview version of Windows 8.1, and continues to do so, on a regular basis. But now it appears that some of these updates have resulted in unexpected changes to a number of computers.

Forum posting on Microsoft’s support forums reveal that keyboard layouts are automatically switched to US. This happened when users applied some updates, and it appears that there is no way to undo this change, at least not until Redmond releases a fix.

As one user explained his case:

“The problem is, as a German citizen I have a German Keyboard with a German Layout. Of course I tried this Alt-Shift and Windows-Space Combination, but it still has no effect.”

While this is probably a minor bug, language and keyboard issues can take a while to fix. This particular problem obviously concerns the localized versions of Windows 8.1, so the company will probably fix this issue in the final version of the OS that is on track for an August release.
