The second update for Windows 8.1 is set to debut next month, but unsurprisingly, most everyone is talking about Windows 9, the next full version of the platform.
Which makes sense, because of all the features that are to be implemented in this major refresh of the platform that is on track for release sometimes in 2015. But the release date of Windows 9 is key here, because according to a new report, the fate of Windows 8.1 Update 3 depends on it.
Fact is, Windows 9 is Microsoft’s main priority right now.
Windows 8.1 Update 2 is still on track to go live at its scheduled date, but depending on how fast work on the next full version of the high profile operating system advances, the company might also release a third update for the current OS.
If, for instance, work is delayed, and Windows 9 skips past its early 2015 release window, then Update 3 is pretty much a certainty in the first few months of next year.
And it stands to reason that Windows 8.1 Update 3 will not bring any major new features. Instead, this version could be used to pave the road for Windows 9 and prepare users (and computers) for the major new release later that year.
File this as a rumor for now, but one that makes a lot of sense.
