Microsoft’s very own Joe Belfiore said this past Friday that Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview will go live early this week, and smack on target the newest version of the mobile OS is now available.

The operating systems boss at Redmond confirmed this.

Long story short, everyone that owns a Windows Phone Store developer account can now download the developer preview flavor of Windows Phone 8.1 — provided they have a compatible device, of course. All Windows Phone 8 handsets support the upgrade, obviously.

If you are not into coding and development, though, there is also a way to get this new version. All you need is a free App Studio account in order to be able to download this preview build.

Do keep in mind, though, that this is nowhere near the final version of the operating system.

The software titan has made it clear that some features will only be added in by the time Windows Phone 8.1 is ready for general release, which in all probability should be sometime this summer. These next few months are all about final refinements and testing.

Everyone that installs this developer preview version of Windows Phone 8.1 will, of course, be able to upgrade to the final update when it is release — so if you install it now, it is a zero risk endeavor.

  1. Wow EOW is pretty late on this one. I already finished the pre-update and I’m about 90% on 8.1 right now. I guess we will see how this goes.

  2. Looks pretty good to me! A little late as Ray mentioned, but it’s nice to have an official preview final. Not the final version as you mentioned, but it’s a start!
