Things have slowed down a bit on the Windows Store front, and this is due to a couple of factors. Not only is the quality of apps has now started to increase, Microsoft has been weeding out spam apps.

Either way, the news of the moment is that the number of Metro apps available for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 has now passed the important milestone of 150,000. This is, obviously, coming from a third-party website that keeps tabs on these numbers.

According to MetroStore Scanner, the total count now comes in at 150,086 at the time of this writing.

As for the pace, the apps repository has slowed down a fair bit in the recent past. Statistically speaking, this makes for a drop of nearly 50 percent.

Windows 8 launched in October 2012, and the Windows Store hit the 100,000 milestone in July 2013, some nine months later. And this latest milestone comes in nearly eight months after that.

In fact, it had crossed the 140,000 apps milestone this past Christmas!

But it still makes for a nice, fancy number, and Microsoft will probably highlight this fact at its upcoming BUILD 2014 event as it unleashes Windows 8.1 Update 1 and shares early details of Windows 9 early next month.

And besides, a whole bunch of high quality apps have landed on the Windows Store in the past couple of months, including official Facebook, Foursquare and Flipboard clients and, more recently, the long-awaited port of VLC Player.

Next up, the important 200,000 apps mark!

  1. Just for comparison sake, how does this compare with Apple and Android app stores? I have to imagine they don’t have that many, but I could be wrong. Either way, 150,000 is substantial.

    • I have to imagine the other 2 have more, but only because the “creatives” go there. It’s a bunch of nonsense, but Windows will catch up someday.

    • I did a google search and it appears apple has over 1 million. 150,000 is a lot, but they obviously have a long way to go to catch up to apple.

  2. I wonder how well that “Cailou” app does. I know Cailou’s extremely popular with younger kids, so I assume the app does very well to distract kids when they’re cranky or upset.
